Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Beware of the Leaven

Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Matthew 16:12

Jesus warned the Apostles to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. At first, they thought He was speaking about bread. When Jesus told them He was not talking about bread, they understood that he was talking about the doctrines of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Jesus knew that even those closest to Him and His teaching could be pulled back to the doctrines that He was drawing them away from.

Early in Billy Graham’s ministry, a close friend turned to liberal theology and tried to convince Billy Graham to do the same. Billy Graham testifies that he did become confused about what to believe. Then one night when he was alone with God, he placed his Bible on a tree stump and said to the Lord, “I know there are things about the Bible I do not understand, but I will preach your Bible.” Often you hear him say, “The Bible says.” Think of what the world would have missed had Billy Graham given in to the temptation to believe what his friend tried to tell him.

Some believers reject the New Testament message of the believer’s oneness with Christ and would try to convince you that you are believing and living heresy. Beware of anyone seeking to turn you from the message that has given you the abundant life.

Turning back to legalism will rob you of many things. Among them are: the joy of living by grace, the blessing of leading others to the liberating life of grace and the privilege of growing as a Christian until you leave this life on earth.
