Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Break Up That Marriage!

… you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another …Romans 7:4b

It would seem that in Cain we have the first recorded case of depression. “His countenance fell.”

Using marriage as an illustration of a spiritual truth, Paul mentions in Romans 7:1-3 that a wife can be married a second time if her first husband dies. The powerful spiritual truth he has in mind is the relationship of a believer to the law and to the Lord Jesus.

Marriage compared to the law is like the first marriage in the illustration. It can be broken up only through death. Marriage to Jesus is like the second marriage in the illustration.

When we attempt in our human strength to keep the laws of the Bible and the religious laws which were made by man, we are revealing a relationship to the law which is as intimate as a marriage.

In Paul’s statement that the Christian has died to the law, he is referring to our crucifixion. It is only when we experience our crucifixion that we are free to relate to Jesus as a spiritual husband. It is then that we permit Him to be our leader and provider.

Paul goes on to say that in our marriage to Jesus, who is raised from the dead, that we bring forth fruit to God. If we refuse to break up the first marriage, we live in the flesh. And we experience all the negatives that come from living in the flesh.

We break up the old marriage and enter into the new marriage by obeying the five commands of Romans 6:11-13.
