Bringing Joy to the Heart of Our Savior

From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.  Ephesians 4:16

Ephesians 4:16 shows that believers can be the Lord’s instruments in answering Jesus’ own prayer.

Jesus’ longest recorded prayer occurred only hours before His crucifixion. In this prayer Jesus repeatedly asked the Father that His followers be one. His requests for oneness are found in verses 11, 21, 22, and 23 in the seventeenth chapter of John.

Ephesians 4:15 presents Jesus as “the head” of the body—or the church. Ephesians 4:16 speaks of all parts of the body growing together in love. Verse 16 begins with “… from whom,” meaning from Jesus the head of the body. Jesus is the ultimate source of all the growth of the body in love.

The words between the subject—the whole body—and the predicate—maketh increase of itself in love—in Ephesians 4:16 reveal how Jesus works through the members of the church to bring an increase in love. The members of the church are:

“fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth according to the effectual working of the measure of every part …”

“Every joint” refers to each member of the church. Jesus is the source that brings about the unity of love as the members live out their union with Christ.

What a joy it must be to Jesus when the members of His church experience their union with Him and with each other in love.

A spirit of oneness among believers should spread beyond one’s own church. Jesus will express Himself in love through each believer to all other believers.
