Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Can Even A Christian Be Good?

We often say things like “he is a good man.” However, consider the following Scriptures.

Romans 3:12b  There is none who does good, no, not one.

Matthew 19:17  And he (Jesus)  said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God

In light of these statements from Scripture, is it possible for even a born-again child of God to be good?

We must admit that left to ourselves it is impossible for us be good. But the good news is that it is gloriously possible for us to be filled with “goodness.”

In Ephesians 5:18 we are commanded to be filled with the Spirit. A literal translation of the command is that we continue to be filled with the Spirit.

In Galatians 5:22 the Scriptures declare that the fruit of the Spirit is … goodness ….

The conclusion of the matter is that when we are filled with the Spirit, we are filled with the fruit of the Spirit—including goodness.

Even though we are not good, when we continue to live out the five imperatives of Romans 6:11-13, we will be continually be filled with the Spirit—and with “goodness.”
