Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Fulfilled Desires

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.  Proverbs 13:12

All of us know the feeling of hoping for something that never came. That made the heart sick. We also know the experience of hope being filled and the result was “a tree of life.” The fulfillment changed everything.

Psalm 37:4 provides another thought about our desires. The passage says:

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

If our desires were the same as God’s, we would live under the tree of life. We would not have sick hearts from not receiving something we passionately desire. After all, God is the One who is sovereign and gives the desires of our hearts when He so pleases.

What can we do to bring our desires in harmony with those of God?

A good place to start is in understanding why our desires are not always in harmony with God’s desires? The problem is our sin nature. We think we are wise.

Because this is our sin nature, we do not look to God for His wisdom. We feel adequate to choose our own way. God’s desires and some of ours are no longer in harmony. God will not fulfill those desires not in harmony with His. The result is the sick heart.

If we will live out the life of grace, our desires will progressively be in harmony with God’s desire. Then we will progressively live under the tree of life.
