Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

In Everything Give Thanks

… in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.  1 Thessalonians 5:18

On the first day of a revival the host pastor said to the evangelist, “John, there is a lady I want us to visit one day this week. She has had a terrible tragedy in her family and has said she will never come to church again.” That same day they visited her.

John listened to her tell the story of her life. He had never heard anything like it. He never said a word until God had given him a message for this grieving mother.

Two years before that day, God had revealed to John his oneness with Christ. Soon after that, the Lord impressed him to begin obeying 1 Thessalonians 5:18. It was life changing. The verse says, “In all things give thants for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” John read the verse to her then told her that some interpret that to mean “in spite of all things give thanks.” Then he added that it really means for all things give thanks.

Then John said, “I know it would be very difficult to thank God for all the suffering you have gone through and are experiencing now, but if you can find it in your heart to do so, God will bless you.”

That evening John watched to see if she came to the revival service that first night. She didn’t. She did come the next night with that same look of grief on her face. She missed only one other service the entire week.

On Saturday night, John told something funny. He happened to look at her. She laughed as big as anyone in the congregation. Sunday night the church had a testimony service. She stood and said, “I have learned to thank God for my burdens.” Thirty five years after that revival, John heard that she was still a faithful member of that church.

You may have never thanked God for all things. If that is so, just try it during this Thanksgiving season. God will bless you.
