More Laborers for the Harvest

The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.  Matthew 9:37b-38

These straightforward words of Jesus reveal two things about laborers for the harvest: More are needed and believers are participants in the supply of those needed laborers. We are to pray for the Lord of the harvest to send them.

In other passages, Jesus reveals another way believers can involve themselves in the expansion of the Kingdom’s labor force.

When Jesus spoke of the coming of the Holy Spirit to believers, He referred to the Holy Spirit as “the comforter”—a word with multiple meanings. One of those meanings is “encourager.”

The Holy Spirit lives in us to “encourage” us. He makes us know we are of value to the Lord and to others. Knowing we are usable results in a desire and willingness to make ourselves available to be used.

The Holy Spirit also does His work of encouragement through us.

The greatest opportunity some believers have for serving others is that of being an instrument of encouragement to fellow-believers—a service of great importance because so many believers think of themselves as having little or no value in the Kingdom work.

When we encourage others through the prompting of the Holy Spirit, the result is more laborers for the harvest.

We can also be instruments of the Holy Spirit for teaching our fellow-believers how to be filled with the Spirit.

For those who respond, there is a continual realization they are useful in the Kingdom—which results in more laborers for the harvest.

As we continue to be filled with the Holy Spirit, He will continually do His work of encouragement and teaching through us.

The result will be more laborers for the harvest.
