Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Overcoming the World

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 1 John 5:4

In 1 John 2:15-16, John says of the world, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father but is of the world.”

Paul indicates the strong attraction of a person, even a Christian, to the world with his words in Romans 12:2, “And do not be conformed to this world.”

Unfortunately, many of God’s children in our nation have not resisted that attraction. This has taken them away from a fruitful life God has planned for a believer. It has taken away from their influence on those who are of the world. Many are saying that this has brought the judgment of God upon our nation.

It would be good for all God-loving believers to pray often Psalm 139: 23-24. The passage reads: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Perhaps God has revealed to you that you have conformed to the world but you now desire to overcome the world. It is possible for you to do so. Of course, according to 1 John 5:4, you would seriously first ask yourself the question, “Have I been born again?” No one can overcome the world who has not been saved by faith.

If one is certain that he has been saved but knows he has conformed to the world, he needs to know the words of Jesus, “I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Then one would need to be aware of 1 John 5:4 that says, “… this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”

We need to add to our assurance that we have been born again the faith that when we were born again we were spiritually crucified, buried, and resurrected. Then, by faith we must continually obey the five statements listed below. We will then continually be one of the world’s overcomers.
