Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

Put to Death Your Members

Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry Colossians 3:5

The term “members” is almost exclusively used in the New Testament to make reference to the parts of our bodies—whether referring to our bodies literally or symbolically, as when using the human body as a picture of the church.

But in this passage the Apostle Paul uses the term to make reference to such things as “evil desire” and “covetousness.” Why would such a non-physical thing as covetousness or evil desire be described as something that is physical?

The answer must be that there are some evil desires that can become so ingrained in us that it is as though they are as attached to us as if they were a part of our bodies.

Paul says, “Mortify” (KJV) those things. That is, put them to death. The truth is they are features of our “old man” and our old man was crucified when we received Jesus as Lord and Savior.

So, we can put to death in our own lives and experiences what has already been put do death by our baptism into the death of Jesus.

And we experience the crucifixion of our old man—including those members so thoroughly attached to us—when we understand that we are crucified, buried, and resurrected and obey the five imperatives of Romans 6:11-13.
