Receiving God’s Plan, Our Next Move

Keep thinking about things above, not things on the earth, for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:2-3

Colossians 3:1-4 is about Jesus becoming the “life” of each believer. Colossians 3:2-3 concerns God’s desires about what His children should do next. Each believer must continually think about God’s plan for his next move.

The phrase in verse two “not thinking about things on earth” does not mean we are to be unaware of our earthly circumstances. It means that we are not to keep our minds on our own circumstances or reach solutions regarding them.

The statement “we died” is a reference to the crucifixion of our “old man” which includes our sin nature of thinking we are wise. When we experience our crucifixion, we no longer rely on our own wisdom. Also, we are free from trying to decide what our next move will be.

Colossians 3:3 speaks of our life being “hidden.” In the New Testament something that is “hidden” can be known, but it is known only by divine revelation. What we are to do next is hidden or not known to us. We will know what our next move should be when God reveals it to us.

In Colossians 3:4 Paul writes:

When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. (NASB):

In Colossians 3:1 Paul says we are seated with Christ. What an appropriate place to receive God’s revelation.

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.

In this verse the “If” should be translated “Since.” We have been raised with Christ and we are with Him at the right hand of the Father.

Imagine this: God Himself has plans about what each believer is to do next. Our best opportunity to receive a revelation of God’s thoughts is by experiencing our crucifixion, burial, and resurrection.
