Abraham's Seed

Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham.    Galatians 3:7

Immediately following the justification of Abraham (Genesis 15:6), God promised him the land of Canaan. Other passages reveal that the promise was also to his descendants.

In Galatians 3:13, Paul says that through faith in the crucified Christ, the Gentiles will receive the blessing of Abraham—that is his justification. This is when a person also becomes a “faith son” of Abraham. In Galatians 3:14, Paul writes that those who are justified have received a promise just as those who are the birth descendants of Abraham received a promise. The promise to those who are Abraham sons by faith is the Holy Spirit.

Concerning the promise to Abraham’s sons by faith, Galatians 3:16 says, “Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ.” In Galatians 3:19, Paul adds that God’s plan was to keep His people under law until Jesus—the seed—came.

The promise to the “natural birth sons” of Abraham was not fulfilled until over 400 years after it was made. The promise of the Holy Spirit was in Jesus—the seed—from the time of His birth and is received by the “faith sons” of Abraham at the time of their justification.

In Galatians 3:27-29, Paul writes, “For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. … and if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

All who have been justified by faith have been baptized into Jesus by the Holy Spirit, are the seed of Abraham and have received the promise of the Holy Spirit. As the natural birth descendants of Abraham long to live in their promised land of Canaan, the faith seed of Abraham can joyfully give themselves to walking in the promised Holy Spirit?
