Temples and Tools

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?    1 Corinthians 6:19

Present … your members as instruments of righteousness to God.    Romans6:13

In light of the context of Romans 6:11-13, the use of the word “members” in Romans 6:13 refers to our body. So we see in Scripture two divine usages of a believer’s body. They are temples of the Holy Spirit and the tools of God.

In order for a Jewish person to worship at the temple, he had in some cases, to travel many miles. Because God’s children are temples of God, they take the worship experience to others. This is amazing. The Holy Spirit can use the believer’s body to create an atmosphere of worship to one person or to a group. All over planet earth, every day God is using the bodies of Spirit filled believers to create worship experiences in any physical settings.

Notice the words “You are not your own” in 1 Corinthians 6:19. When a believer lives this out, God has access to his body to take it where He wants it in order to create worship of Himself.

The believer’s body is also the tool of the Lord. The word “instrument” in the passage quoted has the idea of God’s tool.

Think of the times you needed to drive a nail. You certainly did not make the attempt with your thumb. You found a hammer and used it.

There is a popular saying that God has no hands but our hands and God has no feet but ours. When available, God can use a person’s hands and feet to go where He wants to go and do what He wants to do.

Possibly, the most important part of our body that is a tool used by God is our tongue. With that instrument, He can get the gospel out and can teach and encourage believers.
