Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

The Cross and the Law

And you … He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.    Colossians 13a-14.

Legalism is a great curse on modern day evangelical Christianity. When we live by law—whether the laws of the Bible or man-made laws—we are in the flesh. See Romans 8:3. But Jesus did away with law-living at the cross. In addition to the passage above, read the following.

For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation,  having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace.  Colossians 2:14-15

Also Galatians 5:24 tells us that when our flesh was crucified at conversion. We died to the law at that time.

Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.  Romans 7:4

Being set free from the bondage of law-living through the Lord Jesus, we are now able to live as brides of our spiritual groom—the Lord Jesus. This marriage will produce fruit to God.
