Living by Grace

Dedicated to providing guidance in daily living through the power of God's grace as experienced in our union with Christ.

The Lord's Portion Is His People

For the Lord's portion [resource] is His people; Jacob [Israel] is the place of His inheritance.    Deuteronomy 32:9

Just as God is the portion of His people, God’s people are His portion. The idea of the term portion is that of resource. First Peter 2:9 indicates God’s people as His portion in two ways. The verse reads:

But you are a … holy [set apart] nation, His own special people …

In a negative way, Psalm 78:41 reveals that God’s portion is His people. Speaking of the Israelites the passage says:

Yes, again and again they tempted God, And limited the Holy One of Israel.  Psalm 78:41

We must depend on God as our portion—our resource—in every area of our lives. God has chosen to make His people His resource in some areas of His activity.

Consider a statement on prayer.

Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.  1 John 5:14-15

There are some things God desires to do through us, but He will not do them until we ask Him. This is an excellent illustration of God’s children being His resource. Also God’s has limited Himself to spreading the Gospel of Jesus through His people. His children are God’s portion in aiding believers to grow in their Christian lives.

We are greatly honored that God takes us along with Him in accomplishing some of His work.

Because we love the Lord who is our portion, we desire to be in close fellowship with Him that we might successfully be His portion in those areas He has chosen.

Living out our union with Christ provides us the best way to know how He wants to use us next—to successfully be God’s portion.
